The following letter, sent 10 April 2026, relates to the termination of funding by the Government of Alberta, and the withdrawal of grants related to ongoing projects related to air quality in Alberta.

Subject: Request for Reconsideration of Operational Grant Termination and, if Required, Limited Exception to Clause 5.5 – Clean Air Strategic Alliance (23GRSTR01)

Dear Minister Hunter,

The Southern Alberta Group for the Environment (SAGE) is a non-partisan voice for a healthy and environmentally sustainable community. Our mandate is to inform citizens, participate in public consultation processes and support sound environmental initiatives and actions. SAGE has participated on the Clean Air Strategic Alliance for nearly twenty years as a part of a multi-stakeholder model that effectively brings together industry, government, Indigenous communities, and non-government organizations. This organization has contributed significantly to addressing important issues around air quality in Alberta.

SAGE supports the letter written by Andre Asselin, Executive Director of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance on March 27, 2026. Specifically, we endorse the request for the EPA to reconsider the decision to cancel CASA’s operating grant (grant agreement 23GRSTR01) and reinstate funding to the previous level for the original term (until March 2027). If funding will not be reinstated, we would request to amend the existing grant agreement to allow CASA to use any remaining grant funds after May 26, 2026, to support operations rather than returning them to EPA.

Pollution monitoring, management and abatement projects provide value-added information to industry and government and support initiatives that reduces harm to people and the environment, thus reducing health-care costs and improving productivity. This important work is efficiently addressed by the Clean Air Strategic Alliance. As such, we encourage the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas to meet with CASA to explore opportunities to sustain operations and to complete projects currently being funded through grants.
